IMF Denies Reports That it Would Play Special Advisory Role in Greek Bailout

Gerry Rice_IMF
Gerry Rice, Head of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Communication Office, denied a report by Reuters stating that the IMF would hold a special advisory role in Greece’s bailout. The report cited two IMF sources pointing to a new role created just for the IMF. The role was to be setup to allegedly appease both German voters that want the fund’s involvement, while also keeping to its own statements that it would not be part of a bailout that did not include debt relief.
The same report had said that the Fund is increasingly resigned to European resistance to debt relief for Greece and it is now in talks to accept a newly created role that would let it play a part with limited formality, according to sources.
Rice refuted that sources from the IMF said, again according to the report, that its new role would be one of advisor but without strict conditionality, like compliance and economic health checks every three months.
