IMF Chief Special Advisor Lipton: IMF Participation in Greek Bailout Only if Debt Conditions Are Met

David Lipton, Special Advisor to the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), was interviewed by German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. During the interview he refuted comments made by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble that the IMF would acquiesce and participate in the Greek bailout program by the end of the year.
Lipton said that the IMF would enter the bailout program if certain conditions were created for it to help Greece. The Fund is continuing to seek debt relief for Greece so that the country is in a position to have debt sustainability.
Schaeuble’s statements that the IMF has until the end of the year to commit to the bailout for Greece were torn down by Lipton who said that the IMF cannot be given such ultimatums. The stand taken by the high-ranking IMF official creates a headache for Schaeuble ahead of the 2017 elections.
