Following the recent clash between SYRIZA and the Church over the role of religion classes in school, the leader of the Independent Greeks, Panos Kammenos has come out saying that he will withdraw his support for the government if the Church’s stance is disregarded.
The comments come after a meeting between Archbishop Ieronymos and Prime Minister Tsipras took place over the past week where Kammenos reported that a “solution was found” between the Church and State.
However, on Tuesday Kammenos made statements on Antenna TV explaining that any conflicts between the Church and State would be “catastrophic” and lead his nationalist party to withdraw their support of the leftist-led coalition government.
“If the government were to say that it will ignore the Church and change everything with regard to religion at schools and did away with Orthodoxy, then I wouldn’t support it,” he said.
