State Minister Nikos Pappas to Revoke TV Law if Council of State Rules Against It

Nikos_Pappas_-_GreeceState Minister Nikos Pappas said that the Greek media landscape would return to its previous condition of unlicensed television stations if the Council of State (CoS) ruled that the TV license law was unconstitutional. He made this statement on the morning after a CoS decision to uphold appeals lodged by six television channels against the government’s TV law.

Pappas, the minister who had introduced the aw being examined by judges of the CoS, said that the court was still examining whether the law was constitutional, stressing that no judgment has been passed as yet during his interview with the Greek State Radio and Television Network (ERT). He claimed that judges were being pressured by “business interests” and criticized news bulletins that defended the business interests rather than informing the public. He said that the main opposition New Democray (ND) party was the mouthpiece of these interests. “In order to topple the government, the opposition is throwing its weight behind vested interests,” he said.
On Tuesday, 16 judges against nine voted to uphold the appeals against the auction, going against the advice of the court’s rapporteur. The unexpected move is a loss for SYRIZA as it paves the way for the judges to discuss whether the law drafted by Pappas is in line for the constitution.
