Tension Rising: Dogfights in Aegean as Turkish Fighter Jets Enter Greek Airspace

turkish military jetThe continuing verbal exchange between Turkey and Greece over a wide range of topics from the EU-Turkey deal on migration to the Treaty of Lausanne has increased the tension between the two countries.
According to reports by authorities, there have been several airspace violations over the past months as Turkey’s aircraft have been entering Greece’s borders.
The latest report of airspace violation comes on Wednesday as two Turkish F-16s violated Greek airspace southeast of Rhodes and south of Kastellorizo. The two Greek islands are located in the Aegean Sea and the violation was noted around 4 p.m.
According to Defense Ministry officials, two Greek fighter jets were then dispatched immediately from the base at Souda Bay and pursued the two armed Turkish jets, driving them out of Greek airspace.
Following this event two additional armed Turkish jets entered Greek airspace, engaging in a dogfight with the Greek forces. Turkey’s jets eventually pulled back with no further incident.
