Police Raid Two Schools and Put an End to Student Sit-Ins

katalipsi
Police raided the grounds of two secondary schools in Lamia, central Greece, where pupils were staging school sit-ins to protest cutbacks and the poor facilities at their grounds. The police officers entered the grounds on Friday and arrested 11 people responsible for the occupation of one of the schools. Specifically, ten pupils and one parent had organized the sit-in at the schools were taken into custody. The police also removed four students at the second school.
Such occupations of school grounds are regular and the police customarily respect the sit-ins at high schools and universities. In the past, these type of occupations have not been without damage to public property and inappropriate behavior on the part of students. Despite the problems caused to other students who are prevented from entering the grounds and taking part in lessons, the police rarely enter and make arrests.
