A Cyprus police spokesperson, Andreas Angelides, says that a vessel of migrants has been towed to a harbor on the island’s northwestern coast, AP reports.
The boat was towed to the harbor early Friday morning after having been spotted late Thursday evening a few miles off the coastline of the island.
Reports by Angelides state that there were some 83 people aboard the vessel, including 37 children and that at this time all people aboard are believed to by refugees from Syria.
At this time authorities are trying to determine if the migrants crossed from Mersin, Turkey and whether or not their final destination was Cyprus.
Cyprus is located some 100 miles or 160 kilometers from Syria’s Mediterranean coast, but has not seen many refugees landing on its shores. Mainly refugees from Syria as well as other conflict zones, seek to go to the Greek Aegean islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos.
The AP has reported that Cypriot authorities from the Civil Defense on Cyprus said that the 83 people will be escorted and processed at a migrant reception center located on the outskirts of Nicosia.
