WWF Greece Calls on Citizens to Help Spread Forest Fire Awareness and Prevention

thassos fireFollowing the dreary news from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) that forest fires in Greece has been dubbed the fifth worst year in a decade for 2016, the environmental conservation organization, WWF Greece, has called for action.
At a meeting for WWF Greece on Thursday, the organization’s local action coordinator, Elias Tziritis called for greater public education in forest protection against fires.
“The fire protection mechanism is not just state agencies,” Tziritis said. “Every citizen needs to feel they are an important link in the chain of protection of our forests.”
According to data from the EFFIS, Greece had a horrific year with more than 30,000 hectares of brush and forest fire burning throughout the country. The worst damage by fires was noted on the islands of Thasos, Chios and Evia.
