Guilty: $1.5M Fine for Greek Shipping Magnate Evangelos Angelakos for Pollution and Cover-up

gallic graecaU.S. District Judge John Coughenour has fined shipping magnate Evangelos Angelakos a $1.5 million payout after a jury found two ships that are part of his company guilty of pollution on the high seas, the AP has reported.
The judge said it was troubling to him that one of the cargo ships was deliberately pumping oil-polluted water into the ocean. But their guilt does not end there as they then repeatedly lied about their actions and even went as far to falsify records in order to cover up the crime that was under investigation by the inspectors from the U.S. Coast Guard.
The sentence was handed down on Friday in what is being called a “rare success in holding corporate defendants accountable for pollution on the high seas” by the AP as these types of crimes are very difficult to prove.
