Opposition Parties Against SYRIZA's Choice of Vyron Polydoras as TV Watchdog Chief

esrThe government’s choice of Vyron Polydoras as head of the National Council of Radio and Television (NCRTV) met with staunch criticism and opposition. Polydoras was former heavyweight in the main opposition New Democracy party, having served as minister for public order and justice during the term of Kostas Karamanlis. The ND isn’t the only party to reject the proposal, hence Polydoras’ candidacy for the top post of the TV watchdog is at risk when bearing in mind that the Council of Presidents needs to support the bid by 4/5 for it to be successful.
Opposition by the ND Party
“The government, trapped in deadlocks of its own creation, appears to be desperate. It must comply with the CoS decision that judged the Pappas law unconstitutional instead of playing communications games,” the announcement of the ND party said. “In any case, as we all know, the person of Vyron Polydoras proposed by Tsipras for the chair of the NCRTV does not meet the requirements that the institution demands.”
The ND’s suspicion of Polydoras comes as no surprise bearing in mind that he had been expelled from his party’s parliamentary faction in 2012 but had refused to give up his seat as a member of the Special Permanent Committee of Institutions and Transparency. In 2012, he had been accused by nepotism after giving his daughter a position in Greek Parliament while he served as Speaker of the House. In 2014, he founded the party Union for the Homeland and the People for the 2014 EP elections.
It should be noted, however, that he was expelled from his party’s parliamentary faction in 2012 but had refused to give up his seat as a member of the Special Permanent Committee of Institutions and Transparency. It comes as little surprise that the conservative faction claims that he does not fulfill the necessary requirements for the post, rejecting the government’s proposal.
Socialist PASOK
A socialist party announcement stated that it will do all it can to ensure that the make-up of the NCRTV will be one that will ensure regulation in the media sector. “The people to make-up the independent body – especially that of President – are obliged to meet strict preconditions so that they can symbolically and essentially respond to the increased responsibility and gather wider acceptance,” said an announcement. “The choice of Vyron Polydoras as a candidate does not meet with the criteria that we have set. The proposal merely serves the known political games of SYRIZA/ANEL with the conservative faction, in exchange for political asylum for destruction for the country for the period 2004-2009.”
Centrist To Potami
Centrist To Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis said that the party will not agree to the decision. Taking to Twitter, he wrote that the decision sets the party “60 years backwards.”
“It will not vote for an NCRTV chief from Greece’s deep past of bankruptcy… it will not be an accomplice to the downward path that the government has chosen,” said an announcement issued by the party.
Greek Communist Party KKE
The KKE party said that the choice shows a desire to “disorient” public opinion. He said that turning the matter of TV licenses into the “mother of all battles” is the way in which the SYRIZA ruling party and ND hope to turn the attention away from all the crucial matters that are causing problems for people’s daily lives.
Union of Centrists
The party’s position urges the ND to help in the creation of the NCRTV or else it will appear to be a party that only cares about overthrowing the government.
