The fifth meeting of the Greek Parliament Presidents failed to agree on the make-up of the National Council of Radio and Television (NCRTV), Greece’s independent TV regulator. In the aftermath of the failed meeting, the main opposition conservative New Democracy party on Tuesday put forth the recommendation that former Supreme Court president Athanasios Koutromanos as a candidate for the helm of the NCRTV.
As part of its bid to break the deadlock, ND spokesperson George Koumoutsakos said that Koutromanos “enjoys a completely transparent public career, is of good standing and broadly accepted.”
The proposal comes following the ruling SYRIZA party’s surprise announcement for right-wing politician Vyronas Polydoras to head the NCRTV in an announcement on Saturday that was met with controversy. Following dissent, SYRIZA put forth writer and journalist Rodolfos Moronis, however, the fifth meeting failed to accept his leadership bid by three votes on Monday night.
The government also conformed to a decision by the Council of State ruling the TV license auction as unconstitutional and submitted an amendment that suspends the right of State Minister Nikos Pappas to grant TV licenses.
