New Greek Parliament President’s Session for Election of Greek TV Watchdog

voutsisGreek Parliamentary Speaker of the House, Nikos Voutsis, called for a new session of house deputy speakers to discuss the make-up of the National Council of Radio and Television (NCRTV) for Monday, November 7. The new effort to take place at 3 p.m. is geared towards breaking the deadlock regarding Greece’s private broadcasting licenses following the Council of State’s decision that a TV auction of licenses was unconstitutional.
On Monday, the ruling SYRIZA party submitted an amendment to Greek Parliament reinstating the powers of the NCRTV, the independent TV watchdog, and suspending the right of State Minister Nikos Pappas from granting broadcasting rights.
The main opposition conservative New Democracy party spokesperson George Koumoutsakos made comments during a radio interview on Wednesday stating that the government should scrap the law altogether before the council is convened. In an effort to break the deadlock created, the ND party proposed former Supreme Court president Athanasios Koutromanos.
Pappas hailed the ND proposal, underlining that the two sides are proceeding towards convergence, while also expressing hopes that other opposition parties would follow suit.
