Teachers March Alongside Students to Protest More Education Cutbacks

olme secondary teachers protestOn Monday teachers protested with students against cutting funding towards education by the Greek government as a part of their austerity program.
As education already has seen cutbacks lessening the hours of classroom time as well as hiring fewer teachers, the union representing secondary school teachers in Greece called the Federation of Secondary School Teachers (OLME) to protest in a march starting outside the main entrance to Athens University which was scheduled to begin at noon. Teachers participating in the march are holding a three-hour work stoppage that is planned to last until 2 pm, sources have reported.
One of the demands on the table by the protestors involves hiring more teachers, as the country has a shortage creating “teaching gaps” at schools, the Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported.
Also, sources say that the protests are because of the government’s plans to merge, and in some cases, abolish school departments in order to cut costs and abide by the latest austerity plans.
