The difference between New Democracy and SYRIZA is widening in opinion polls, as the conservative party is ahead by 15 percentage points on intention to vote.
The study was conducted November 3-4 by the Public Opinion and Market Research Unit of the University of Macedonia, on behalf of Skai television.
New Democracy appears to lead with 30% of participants choosing the conservative party and 15% going for the ruling leftist party.
Ultra rightists Golden Dawn come steadily third (7%) and the Greek Communist Party fourth (5.5%), the Democratic Coalition follows at 4.5% and the Centrists Union is next at 3% along with Plefsi Eleftherias with the same percentage.
Based on the survey figures, the remaining parties would not make it to parliament as they have less than 3% of the total vote. To Potami and junior coalition partner Independent Greeks (ANEL) gathered 2% each, hard leftists ANTARSYA were favored by 1.5% of respondents and leftist SYRIZA offshoot Popular Unity came at 1%.
However, 19% of participants either refused to answer or were unsure of which party to vote for yet, while 6.5% answered that they would for a party other than those on the list.
Regarding party dynamics, 64% of respondents believe that New Democracy would win if elections were held today, while only 12.5% believe that SYRIZA would get the most votes.
The vast majority of participants (87%) believe that the country is moving in the wrong direction and 89% are dissatisfied with the government’s performance. It is worth noting that only 13% of those who voted for SYRIZA in September 2015 are satisfied with the administration’s performance. Conversely, 79% of SYRIZA voters are not satisfied by the hitherto government work.
Also, cohesion of SYRIZA voters stands at 35.5%, that is only one in three SYRIZA voters would vote for the party again. However, out of those who are dissatisfied by SYRIZA, only 10% would swing and cast a vote for New Democracy, while 25.5% of them would abstain from the ballot box.
Arguably, the main part of voters who would abstain from the ballot box come from the pool of SYRIZA voters. In particular, on those who say they will refrain from voting, 67.5% are former SYRIZA voters, while only 13.5% come from the New Democracy side, while the remaining 19% who would abstain come from other parties.
Finally, on the question of who is more suitable for prime minister, 37% of participants favor New Democracy chief Kyriakos Mitsotakis and 20.5% favor Alexis Tsipras.
