The European Court of Justice (ECJ) announced on Thursday that it would accept an appeal submitted by the European Commission (EC) against Greece in 2011 for the country’s failure to protect the endangered Caretta Caretta loggerhead sea turtle in the bay of Kyparissia, located in the western Peloponnese.
The Greek state had failed to fulfill its obligation regarding the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora in the coastal area that is protected under Natura 2000, a EU environmental network set up to ensure the protection of endangered species and their habitats. The ECJ’s decision refers specifically to the geographical region at Kyparissia whereas previous appeals had referred to the Ionian islands.
The sand dunes of Kyparissia were placed on the list of areas that have importance due to the existence of sea turtles in 2006. European laws protect the endangered species of turtles and its existence requires the creation of special preservation zones.
