Immigration Officials: 13,000 Asylum Seekers Have Gone Missing in Greece

idomeni refugeesIt appears that not all migrants bottleneck in Greece and that some — as many as 13,000 to be precise — have managed to slip across the border to the north and enter other EU countries.
According to immigration officials, only some 50,000 of the 63,000 registered migrants stranded in Greece can be accounted for.
One official told the Wall Street Journal that the unaccounted for migrants “have not been monitored for months,” while another official commented that the locations of the “no shows,” or migrants who are not accounted for at the reception centers, is unknown. “No one knows where the ‘no-shows’ currently are,” the official said. “No one knows if they have already left the islands, or don’t show up in the hope that something will change for them.”
Recent reports by Greek officials and immigration authorities estimate that each month some 500 migrants illegally cross the closed northern borders of Greece to other EU countries with the help of smugglers.
Below is a chart published by the Wall Street Journal showing the data presented by the immigration officials who are a separate entity from the Greek government.
