Work on a second runway at Makedonia Airport may be postponed in order to save the deal struck by Fraport in the privatization of 14 regional airports in Greece.
The Fraport/Slentel consortium recently threatened to abandon the operation of the 14 airports due to concerns that if work began today at Makedonia Airport, it would not be fully operational for the 2017 summer tourist season.
Sources familiar with the issues facing Fraport and the privatization project confirmed that “the government is considering a six-month suspension of the work on a second runway at the airport” adding that Fraport Greece has received many letters from foreign airlines regarding this issue and concern over loss of revenues if the airport is not fully operational at such a crucial time.
In light of concerns over Makedonia Airport and other airports in Greece that Fraport/Slentel are to take charge of, the consortium has submitted a list to the Greek government with issues that have yet to be addressed by the state, and according to sources close to the discussions, completing the list will be an expensive task.
