Child Abusing Syrian Refugee Gets 5 Years in Prison in Greece

A 32-year-old Syrian asylum seeker who was arrested on Wednesday for abusing his three-year-old son at the Souda refugee camp on Chios island was sentenced on Friday to five years imprisonment.
The incident took place on Monday, when the man beat his child repeatedly inside a camp shower. Then the man posted the cruel video on social media.
According to Greek police investigation, the man claimed that he had filmed the abuse of his son and sent the footage to his wife who is in Turkey with their other child to blackmail her to come to Greece.
The Chios court found the man guilty of family violence and grave bodily harm that threatened the child’s life. Despite his pleas, apologies and tears, the judge found no mitigating circumstances and sentenced the man to five years in prison without parole.
With orders of the Chios Prosecutor, the boy has been handed over to a non-government organization taking care of unescorted refugee children.
