Russia Foreign Min Says Cyprus Talks Should Turn to UN Council for Security Guarantees

On Friday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry commented in a statement that it feels the most effective way that Cyprus can deal with security guarantees during the Cyprus talks is with the input of the UN Security Council.
Russia also reiterated its position in supporting the reunification of Cyprus with a solution that serves both communities on the island stating: “Russia will support any solution that the Cypriots themselves choose,” in the Foreign Affairs Ministry statement.
The next round of Cyprus talks between President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci are set to take place in Geneva, Switzerland on January 12.
The island has been divided since 1974 when the Turkish military occupied the northern third of the island.
