OIE Reports: Greece Discovers Case of H5N8 Bird Flu in Wild Swan at Evros River Delta

On Monday, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) announced that Greece has reported a case of the dangerously contagious H5N8 bird flu virus in a wild swan in the Evros river delta in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
Sources reported that the initial report concerning the infected bird came from the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food, which the OIE posted on their website.
Although the H5N8 virus is highly contagious, it isn’t transmitted through eating contaminated poultry and it has not been found in humans. Other countries in Europe and the Middle East have reported similar findings of bird flu in the past few weeks and the outbreaks in Asia led to “large-scale culling of poultry in South Korea, China and Japan,” Reuters reported.
