Greek Ambassador to Brazil Missing for 3 Days

Rio de Janeiro police say they are investigating the disappearance of Greece’s ambassador to Brazil, missing since Monday, the Associated Press says.

A police statement on Thursday says Kyriakos Amoiridis was last seen on Monday night, though it did not specify where.

Neither Greece’s Embassy nor the Greek consulate in Rio have made official statements regarding the ambassador’s whereabouts, the AP report says.

According to a Greek foreign ministry official, the ambassador was on official leave for Christmas and his cell phone was switched off.

According to the website of Greece’s Embassy, Amoiridis started his career as diplomat in 1985 in Athens and became Greece’s top diplomat in Brazil in 2016. He served as Greece’s ambassador to Libya and as consul in Rio (2001-2004).
