Refugees Leave Camp Near Athens Due to Snowy Weather

Dozens of refugee families left the Malakasa camp on Thursday due to bad weather, searching for better living conditions.
Despite the fact that the tents were replaced recently with closed structures, the recent heavy snowfall and lack of heat has forced the majority of residents to leave the camp in search of warmth.
Migration Policy Minister Yiannis Mouzalas had stated in November that even the new structures were not adequate and that they will soon be replaced as well. Nevertheless, the structures have not been updated.
Specifically, the power network at the Malakasa hospitality facility is not operating properly and the existing electricity supply is not adequate to heat the hundreds of refugees who live in the camp.
Clement Perrin, of Doctors Without Borders, who is responsible for the organization’s structures in Malakasa, Eleonas, Epirus and Samos, told Kathimerini newspaper the power supply is often interrupted, especially during the night. “The living conditions remain difficult,” he said. Power works should be completed in January, while the refugee center has been operating for at least eight months, he said.
Perrin said that approximately 200 container-type structures were put in the camp to replace tents, but many of them were too old and inadequate to accommodate people.
