The Rare Beauty of the Boucharia Rocks in Northern Greece

A spectacular geological phenomenon, unique in Greece and the Balkan region, appears in the area between Mikrovalto and Livadero, near Kozani in northern Greece.
The fascinating rock formations have been named Boucharia by the locals, thus rendering the name to the area. The word comes from “bouchari” which in the local dialect means chimney.
Rich lore surrounds the chimney-shaped rocks in Bucharia. In the past, locals believed that devils inhabit the area. Later the “chimneys” were described to children as places where fairies hide during the day.
Geologists say this is the result of thousands of years of corrosion in the mountain.
The prefecture of Kozani has created a geological park in order to facilitate access for visitors and to showcase the rare natural phenomenon.
