Flamingos and Swans Found Dead in Xirolimni Lagoon

Approximately 200 birds mostly flamingos, coots and swans were found dead in Xirolimni lagoon, northeastern Greece. Members of the Nestos-Vistonida-Ismarida management body were informed and went to the lagoon where they located the dead birds and sent them to a Thessaloniki lab for examinations.
According to biologist Efterpi Patetsini the death of the birds is possibly attributed to the lack of food and the heavy cold that prevailed in the area in the last period. “However, because we had a case of avian influenza in the region a month ago we have sent samples for further examination” said Patetsini to Athens Macedonian News Agency adding that more birds were found dead during last week’s bird count in the region’s lagoons.
