Greek Court Rules 8 Turkish Servicemen Must Be Detained

The eight Turkish servicemen consisting of pilots and flight engineers who fled to Greece a day after the failed military coup in Turkey on July 15, 2016, are to be temporarily detained after a ruling by the Greek court.
On Wednesday, the court endorsed police arguments that due to national security reasons, it is best that the men be detained for 3 months pending examination of their asylum request.
Just last week, Turkey’s request for their extradition due to their involvement in the coup was rejected by Greece’s Supreme court on grounds that the men’s lives might be in danger there — a decision that prompted anger from Turkey.

The men have appealed for release, arguing that they have not been convicted of any wrongdoing.
