Tsipras-Merkel Agree to Expedite Initiatives for Greek Bailout Program Review

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday agreed to accelerate initiatives from all parties involved in order to complete the bailout program review in February, according to Greek government sources.
The same sources said that the talks between the two state leaders in Malta — on the sidelines of an informal EU summit — are part of the Greek PM’s initiative to give a “political solution” to the stalled negotiations for the completion of the bailout program evaluation. Athens is seeking to restart talks with creditors that have remained stagnant since mid-December.
The German chancellor also briefed the Greek prime minister about her meetings with the Turkish political leadership regarding refugees and the progress of the EU-Turkey agreement, and the Cyprus issue.
In light of the recent Turkish provocations in the Aegean, Tsipras stressed the need for Turkey to respect international law and that the provocative claims and actions in the Aegean undermine Turkish relations and peace and stability in the region.
