IMF Spokesman Says Clear Commitment of Partners Needed to Restructure Debt

The spokesman for the International Monetary Fund, Jerry Rice, briefing journalists today, said that the IMF wants a clear commitment of the partners to restructure the debt, even if it is adopted at a future stage.
Mr. Rice commenting on the Lagarde – Merkel meeting, reiterated that the desire of the Fund is to participate in financing, but that will happen when there are reforms and debt adjustment.
“We need the commitment on a powerful package in order to discuss debt relief which can come at a later date” he said, adding “to participate in the IMF Greek plan, the issue of debt is as important as reforms.”
According to the representative of the Fund, the IMF expects the debate on the debt to come immediately following the discussions on reforms. Only after these two things are accomplished will the Fund be able to bring the financing proposal to the Executive Council.
Mr. Rice declined to predict when the evaluation will be completed, noting that discussions should be allowed to evolve.
He also stated that everyone is putting forth their best effort to create the best possible situation for Greece and the Greek people. He also denied the report by Bild that stated the Fund will be financing only 5 billion.
