AEK Triumphs Over PAOK, Olympiacos Returns to Victories in Greek Super League

Argentinian striker Sergio Araujo scored two magnificent goals that led AEK to a 3-0 victory over PAOK on Sunday and into the play-off positions, while Olympiacos ended their losing streak beating Atromitos.

Araujo was the week’s MVP showing great skills with a great opening goal at the match against PAOK just 49 seconds from kick-off, and then scored from a spectacular curving effort five minutes from the end. Then it was Christos Aravidis’ turn to turn the victory into triumph with a goal at stoppage time. PAOK had defender Stelios Malezas sent off early in the second half.

The victory brought AEK to fifth place, 14 points behind leader Olympiacos that had caretaking coach Vassilis Vouzas on their bench at the 2-0 victory over Atromitos at home, following three straight goalless losses in the league. The result came courtesy of a Manuel Da Costa goal and a Sokratis Fytanidis own-goal, both of them after valuable assists from Costas Fortounis.

Panionios, who is second in the league, is still six points behind Olympiacos after their 1-0 home win over Larissa on Saturday, from another Mohamed Ben goal this season.

Panathinaikos failed again to win away from home, dropping two points at Iraklis but still got within one point from third-placed PAOK. Swedish striker Marcus Berg opened the score in Thessaloniki from the penalty spot. However, after several missed chances, Rasmus Thelander’s own goal was the equalizer in the 73rd minute.

In other results Platanias defeated Veria 1-0, Kerkyra downed Xanthi by the same score and PAS Giannina drew 0-0 with Panetolikos.

On Monday, Levadiakos and Asteras Tripolis will fight a relegation battle.
