Greek Police Evacuate Occupied Buildings

Hellenic Police on Monday morning evacuated two Athens buildings that were occupied by anarchists; the operations were legitimate, said deputy citizen protection minister.
Greek police entered the Drakopouleio blood donation center in central Athens, where they found 127 Syrian refugees, with 37 children among them. The refugees were transferred to the Athens registration center where it was found that most of them had applied for asylum.
The building has been occupied by anarchists since February 2nd and was used as a makeshift refugee camp. The building belongs to the Red Cross and it is scheduled to house
unaccompanied minor refugees. The Red Cross had filed a lawsuit demanding the evacuation of the building.

In another simultaneous operation, police entered Villa Zografou, in the Zografou estate. The building has been occupied since 2012. No one was found inside the building but after the police appearance about 10 people went to the estate to protest. Seven of them were arrested and taken to Athens police headquarters.
Villa Zografou was evacuated after repeated lawsuits by the municipality that wants to turn the building into a conservatory.

Deputy Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas speaking to ANA-MPA radio (104.9 FM) said that both police operations are justified.
“The first building in Zografou, belongs to the municipality of Athens and it is to be used as a cultural facility. The squatters, about 5-6 people, were staying in for some time. The second building belongs to the Red Cross, and it is to be used to house unaccompanied (refugee) children. Inside the building were refugees who should be staying in organized spaces. As you can see both operations are fully justified,” Toskas said.
