National Security Council of Turkey Says 'Legal Rights' in Aegean Top Foreign Policy Concern

The National Security Council of Turkey convened this week and they made their foreign policy priorities clear — Turkish interests and “legal rights” in the Aegean, Cyprus and the war in neighboring Syria.
Turkish foreign policy in the Aegean, according to the council, will revolve around neighborly dialogues with Greece, but also, Turkey says that it “will not, in any case, accept a fait accompli.”
However, over the past 6 months, the Turkish government has increased its irredentist rhetoric in regards to the Aegean and some 200 Greek islands that the country believes are Turkish property. Recently the rhetoric disputing Greek sovereignty in the Aegean has turned to threats by Turkey to repeat acts of violence against Greeks such as the Great Fire of Smyrna of 1922.
