The Oldest Oak Tree in Europe Is in a Northern Greek Town

With a trunk diameter of 2.25 m and a height of 23 meters, botanists say that the oak tree located just two kilometers from the main square of the Deskati town is the oldest in Europe.

The botanists who have examined the tree estimate that it is approximately 1,300 years old, give or take 30-50 years. The residents of the town of Deskati in Northern Greece can now boast that they can bask in the shadow of the oldest oak tree in Europe.

The tree trunk has a diameter of 2.25 meters and the perimeter of its trunk at the height of the parapet is 7.06 meters. It is located at an altitude of 658 meters and its height is more than 23 meters. The tree, both from the size of its trunk and from its age, stirred the interest of the Municipality of Deskati. “We decided to conduct a study with scientists, foresters and researchers to learn the age of the tree,” mayor Dimitris Karastergios told the Athens News Agency.

Botanist Ioannis Spanos, a researcher of the General Directorate of Agricultural Research “Elgo-Dimitra” with his team, took samples from the tree, made special measurements in the trunk rings and after a study they concluded that the age of the oak tree is 1,300 years.

All the necessary procedures were immediately initiated by the Deputy Secretary General of Decentralized Administration of Epirus-Western Macedonia, Vassilis Michelakis to declare the oak tree a “preserved monument of nature,” which has a special scientific, ecological, historical and cultural value and can be valuable in the future for educational purposes while also needing special care and protection.

“We should immediately begin its maintenance, such as cleaning it from dry branches, stuffing the hollow trunk with cork and disinfecting it,” Spanos said.
