Close to a thousand acres of a pine forest have been consumed by a raging fire on Zakynthos on Saturday night.
The fire, that is still in progress, broke out on Saturday afternoon. Zakynthos Fire Department forces, with the help of firefighters from nearby departments, are trying to contain the flames in order not to reach nearby homes. However, strong winds make the firefighters’ efforts all the more difficult, while at the same time spreading the flames further.
Since the afternoon, 45 firefighters from Zakynthos, Amaliada and Pyrgos are operating without stop. On Saturday night, 10 more firefighters from Peloponnese arrived to help the ground forces.
