Unions Representing Municipal Workers on Short-term Contracts Call for Strikes Following Court's Job Ruling

Tensions are rising as unions who represent municipal workers on short-term contracts are calling for strikes through the country in protest of the court’s ruling last week which said that the government legislation which extended temporary contracts is unconstitutional.
The ruling by the State Audit Council was made public on Thursday and said that permanent hiring of short-term contract workers is unconstitutional. It was further stated that if contracted workers remain employed after the date when their contract is set to expire that they cannot receive payment beyond the end date of their original contract.
Following the ruling being made public, in Thessaloniki on Friday municipal workers started a 3-day strike in protest. On Tuesday workers had gathered outside of the Interior Ministry in protest and demanded job security.
