Thessaloniki’s public transport buses will stay parked in their depots for the ninth day in a row on Tuesday after staff in the city’s public transport organization OASTH decided to continue strike action that began on May 15.
OASTH employees are striking to demand payment of back pay owed to them for March and April, as well as an Easter bonus, amounting to a total of 6.3 million euros.
Talking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), the head of their union Dimitris Tsermenidis said an emergency board meeting will be held at noon on Tuesday so that staff can evaluate developments and possibly change their stance.
“In contact with Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis some things were said that are moving in the direction that we, the employees, want. There are still two or three points that remain to be clarified at the emergency board meeting,” he said.
According to the head of OASTH Christos Stefanidis, all that remained to be done was for Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos to return from Brussels on Tuesday night and sign for the early release of funds for the June subsidy to OASTH and the arbitration money, so that the staff could be paid.
