UN Cyprus Envoy Eide: Ending Shuttle Diplomacy Bid for New Peace Conference

UN envoy for divided Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, stated on Friday that he was putting an end to a shuttle diplomacy bid to further peace talks in Geneva since opposing sides didn’t agree on conditions, a Reuters report says.
The UN adviser was working on getting estranged Greek and Turkish Cypriots to continue peace talks in Geneva, but the two sides disagreed on the format of negotiations, the report continues.
“Unfortunately, despite serious efforts to overcome their differences regarding the modalities for meeting in Geneva, the leaders were unable to find common ground,” Eide said in a statement released by the UN mission in Cyprus. “Without a prospect for common ground, there is no basis for continuing this shuttle diplomacy,” he continued.
The island of Cyprus was split during the Turkish invasion in 1974. A stalemate on further negotiations after a two-year process puts peace talks into limbo.
