Warm Weather Causes Influx in New Migrant Arrivals to Eastern Aegean Islands

Greece continues to see an influx of migrants arriving on its shores as the summer weather encourages more people fleeing their countries to attempt the dangerous crossing of the Aegean Sea in hopes of reaching Europe. The area of the country which remains the hardest hit by the migrant crisis is the eastern Aegean islands due to their proximity to Turkey.
According to the latest data by authorities on Monday, there are currently 3,873 migrants trapped on the Greek island of Lesvos, the migrant hotspot that has recent suffered a 6.1 Richter earthquake. Chios has 3,847 migrants stranded on the island as well, being forced to endure the summer heat wave in overcrowded migrant reception camps that are functioning well over capacity.
The influx of migrants arriving on the eastern Aegean islands becomes apparent when comparing the official figures which show that last month there were 9,548 migrants on the islands compared to this month which shows a total of 8,892 migrants trapped on the islands.
