Naxos Potato Growers Prepare to Enter Guinness Book of Records (video)

Naxos potato growers are preparing to enter the Guinness Book of Records for the largest quantity of potatoes served, during the 8th Potato Festival in July.
The Cyclades island is famous for its delicious potatoes and the producers of the Naxos Association of Agricultural Cooperatives want to take advantage of it and enter the Guinness Book of Records by breaking the world record for the largest quantity of potatoes served.
The Naxos farmers want to achieve that during the 8th Potato Festival that will start on July 15. It will take place in Agia Anna (Kapares). With help of island residents, Naxos producers and their families will try to peel, fry and serve visitors more than 550 kilos of the famous island potatoes, fried.
To break the record, 650 kilos of Naxos crude potatoes, 550 liters of the island’s excellent quality olive oil, 22 traditional frying pans and plenty of dishes will be needed.
Until now, the record is held by the British Fish and Chip Shop in the Adventure Island fun park in East London, with 448 kilos of fried potatoes served.
The head of the Naxos Association of Agricultural Cooperatives, Dimitris Kapounis, said: “The Naxos potato is a product that deserves a place in the Guinness World Records. More than 200 families are engaged in its cultivation and each year 5,500 tons are produced on the island. The potato of Naxos along with the other agricultural products have made Naxos the largest rural power of the Cyclades. Anyone who has tasted fried Naxos potatoes already knows why we want to serve so many fried potatoes to the festival guests. Quite simply because its taste is incomparable. Be sure that we will break the record.”
At the same time, two new songs for the potato and the also famous gruyere cheese will be presented at the festival. The event will be presented by television journalists Christos Nezos and Vagia Antonopoulou.
