Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and U.S. Vice President Michael Pence discussed bilateral relations, regional issues and developments on Cyprus over the telephone on Monday.
According to the White House press release, the U.S. Vice President invited the Greek PM to Washington. The two leaders reaffirmed the close ties between Greece and the United States, while Pence congratulated Tsipras on the progress made towards economic recovery and growth.
Also, Pence thanked Tsipras for the role of Greece as a pillar of stability in the region, for its contribution to NATO and for the country’s military co-operation with the United States.
The two officials said they regretted that the recent peace talks between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots proved to be fruitless, and the U.S. Vice President said that the United States will continue to support efforts for a comprehensive settlement to reunify Cyprus as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.
The Greek prime minister will inform the House plenary today (Tuesday) on the developments in the negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
