Cretan Critically Injured From Celebratory Gunfire

A 45-year-old man was critically injured from celebratory gunfire at a wedding in Crete.
The incident occurred at the village of Metaxochori of the Archanes municipality, in the early hours of Friday.
The man was rushed by private car to Venizelion Hospital at Herakleio, with serious injuries to his neck, chest and back.
Later on he was transferred to the intensive care unit of the University General Hospital of Herakleio.
Police made two arrests following the incident.
Celebratory gunfire (balothies) is a common occurrence in Crete. Locals often fire weapons at weddings, christenings and festivals.
Gun ownership in Crete is out of control — it has the highest gun ownership rate in the European Union.
Some experts say the long tradition of opposing central authority – dating from centuries of Ottoman rule – is to blame for feeding this gun culture that has cost the island hundreds of human lives.
