Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake Hits North of Rhodes in the Aegean; At least 2 Dead


A magnitude 6.5 Earthquake hit east of the island of Kos and North of Rhodes in the Turkish side of Aegean Sea at 1:32am (local) on Friday, according to the Greek Department of Geophysics at the University of Athens.
The quake’s epicenter was located, 12 km off the city of Bodrum in Turkey at a depth of 10km below the seabed.


There was a major aftershock of magnitude 5.1 six minutes after the main earthquake as well as at least five other following aftershocks of magnitude greater than 4.
According to local media at least two people have died and more than a dozen have been injured on Kos. Social media posts mention partially damaged buildings in Kos, Rhodes and Bodrum.
Earthquakes have historically caused widespread damage across central and southern Greece, Cyprus, Sicily and other neighboring regions.
