Turkish Cypriots and Ankara Examine Scenarios for Closed City of Famagusta

The Turkish Cypriot side and Ankara are studying various scenarios for the future of Varosha and the closed city of Famagusta, a Kathimerini newspaper report says.
Turkish and Turkish Cypriot plans provide for the opening of Varosha under Turkish Cypriot leadership. Along with the opening of the city, its inhabitants will have the right to return to their homes and properties, assuming the acceptance of “sovereignty” in the area, according to Kathimerini.
The Famagusta Gazette reports that Varosha, once a thriving holiday resort, on the eastern coast of Cyprus, has been fenced off since the 1974 Turkish invasion and according to the UN, the Turkish military is responsible for it. Repeated attempts to hand the fenced off area of Famagusta to UN administration and its Greek Cypriot legal inhabitants have so far failed due to the stance of the Turkish army.
“This decision contravenes resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council 550 and 789, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe which call for the return of Famagusta to its lawful residents,” a press release issued by the Famagusta Municipality says.
The Turkish Cypriot side considers that if legitimate property/home owners are given the right to return, the obstacles created by the UN and its resolutions may be circumvented with relative ease.
The plan for the opening of Varosha under the Turkish Cypriot administration is supported by the Turkish Cypriot Right wing. So far there are no official positions or denials on the subject.
