Greek Student Wins Gold in Mathematical Olympiad

A Greek student from Thessaloniki won one of the gold medals at the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad 2017, held in Brazil.
Vasilis Georgiadis, a high school student from the Mandoulides Thessaloniki School, participated for a second time in the Mathematical Olympiad.
Speaking to Greek media he said that the Gold medal was the best reward for the hard preparation of the previous years.
“I had an interest in mathematics from an early age, but I turned to competition two years ago,” he said.
“I prepared at school, but mainly at home where I studied the mathematical problems and solutions of previous competitions,” he added.
The student successfully solved four of the six themes (number theory, algebra, combinatorics, geometry), gathering 28 points.
Georgiadis says that his love is mathematics but he intends to study at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Greece had an overall successful presence at the Mathematical Olympiad. Apart from Georgiadis’s gold, Greek students won 4 silvers and one bronze.
