Tsipras: 'A Day to Honor the Thousands of Citizens That Resisted the Dictatorship'

The 43rd anniversary since democracy was restored in Greece coincides with the final restoration of economic stability and the recovery of the country, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in a message on Monday marking the toppling of the seven-year junta in 1974.
“This is a day to honor the thousands of citizens that resisted the dictatorship and our people’s struggles for popular rule, independence and social justice,” Tsipras said, while noting that the country’s path toward realizing these goals in the years that followed “was not always easy, nor straight.”
“The extensive intertwining of powerful economic interests with centers and ‘circles’ of power, the lack of accountability and social control and, of course, the multiple repercussions of the economic crisis have raised serious obstacles, especially in recent years,” he noted.
It was now everyone’s collective duty to avoid the mistakes of the past in order to build Greece anew, he added, into a country freed of the games of major interests, petty politics and intolerance. “A Greece of democracy, productive reorganization and social solidarity. A Greece of justice,” he added.
This would require determination and a political will for major reforms and clashes with established interests, Tsipras said, “in order to restore a sense of justice in the Greek people.” He called for more active participation by citizens in decision-making centers, restoring the lost credibility of the political system and “giving content to the concept of democracy,” while noting that this was owed to the younger generations “but also those that have devoted their lives to democracy and freedom in our country.”
