EU Commission Supports Convicted Greek Stats Chief

The first response to the conviction of former Greek Statistics chief Andreas Georgiou today by an appeals court, came from EU Commission spokeswoman, Annika Breidtheart in Brussels.
The spokeswoman reaffirmed the EU Commission’s trust in the Greek Statistics Authority’s (ELSTAT) figures during the contested 2010 – 2015 period, the political dispute over which has led to Mr. Georgiou’s legal issues.
Mrs. Breidtheart also hinted at the fact that the current conviction is not final. After stating that today’s appeals court’s decision is being noted by the Commission, she added that to her understanding, the ruling is open to an appeal to the Greek supreme court, thus confirming speculation that Mr. Georgiou is about to appeal.
