Overnight Battle with the Flames in Kalyvia, South of Athens

Firefighters battled throughout Monday night with the blaze in Kalyvia, south of Athens.
On Tuesday morning traffic Athens-Sounio highway opened to traffic, as helicopters and planes joined the effort to limit the fire.
According to a spokesman of the fire brigade, the flames are now moving towards the area between Lagonisi and Saronida.
The same spokesman said that the danger for the scattered dwellings in the area has, for the time being, been averted.

The blaze broke out in the Kalyvia area some 30 kilometers south of Athens, and quickly spread through tinder-dry vegetation due to strong winds.
Overall, at least 80 firefighters with 30 vehicles aided by volunteers have been battling the flames though the night.
With the first light of Tuesday, the effort has been reinforced by three helicopters and two planes.
