Greek Police Thwart Attempt to Smuggle Rifles and Grenades from Albania

Rifles, grenades, explosives and ammunition were abandoned by a group of three people who attempted to cross the Greek-Albanian border on Sunday.

The suspects abandoned their attempt after they were spotted by Greek police in the area of Mavromatio, in Thesprotia.

The suspects, who were n foot, evaded arrest and fled to Albania.

According to the Greek police the bags abandoned by the suspects contained:

  • Three military rifles (Kalashnikov), with seven magazines
  • Eleven grenades
  • Thirty-three detonators
  • Five TNT explosive tiles
  • A box with ten trigger grenade mechanisms
  • 1593 caliber cartridges (7.62 * 39 mm)

Greek authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
