Houses are Burned at Huge Wildfire in Kalamos, North of Athens

A fire in a wooded area near the town of Kalamos in north-eastern Attica is burning out of control threatening the town.
Television pictures show that the blaze, that begun late afternoon on Sunday, has burned houses in the area and the fire brigade is considering to evacuate part of the town of approximately 10,000 people.

Television pictures also show desperate residents trying to extinguish the fire with buckets and hoses using water from their own backyards.

Dozens of firefighters are currently operating in the area, but local authority officials appeal for more airborne means, such as helicopters and planes, before dark.
Greek authorities ordered a precautionary evacuation of two youth camps in the area.
Meanwhile, wildfires continue to burn in the Greek island of Zakynthos in what officials suspect were the result of arson.
