Travel Receipts from U.S. Tourists in Greece Drop 30% in First 5 Months

Greek tourism industry professionals are concerned over a 30% drop in travel receipts and arrivals from the United States for the January-May period compared to the same period in 2016.
Even though industry representatives see signs of improvement in the number of tourist arrivals from the U.S. for the second half of the year, they point out that valuable revenue was lost in the first five months. At the same time, they note that for the rest of 2017 Greece is not among the luxury vacation destinations for wealthy Americans who choose to travel abroad.
According to the latest available data from the Bank of Greece, tourist revenue from U.S. visitors for the January-May period dropped by 30.8% to € 128.6 million euros, compared to 185.8 million euros in revenue in 2016, and 175.6 million euros in 2015. In May alone, tourist revenue declined by 34.4%. Also, arrivals of American visitors dropped 18.2% in five months, and 35% in May alone.
