Amir; an 11-year-old refugee boy from Afghanistan, will carry the Greek flag during the annual school parade to commemorate the October 28, 1940 anniversary of Greece’s refusal to ally with the Italian Axis powers in World War II, known as “OXI Day.”
Amir; a fifth-year primary school pupil, lives with his family in Athens. They arrived along with many refugees on the island of Lesvos a year and a half ago.
He was picked by lot; under new rules introduced by the Syriza-led government earlier this year, that scrapped flag-bearing selection on the basis of academic performance.
The new parade flag-bearing rules caused a political uproar when announce by the government, with opposition parties accusing Syriza of ideological aversion towards academic excellence.
