Shipping Minister Orders the Recovery of Sunken Cruise Ship 'Sea Diamond' in Santorini

Shipping Minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis ordered on Friday the salvaging of the cruise ship “Sea Diamond” which sank off the port of Santorini ten years ago, in a relevant order directed to the Municipal Harbour Fund of Thira and the island’s Port Authority.
The ship sank on April 5, 2007, after running aground on a reef inside the bay of Fira the previous day, leaving two passengers missing and presumed dead.
“It has remained at the bottom of the Caldera for ten years, with all the consequences this has had for the marine environment of one of the most touristic areas of Greece and the world,” the ministry said in a press release.
“The path towards restoring legality and the protection provided by environmental legislation continues with unwavering determination in the context of a well-designed policy whose results will continue to emerge in the coming days,” it added.
